Snap-On Laptop Sleeves

Sorting through our home is our next challenge. We’re shoveling through a two-story home of things, boxing up what will end up in storage (not much: a dining room table, half our books, keepsakes…that’s about it), arranging the house for an estate sale and figuring out what we need and where we’ll store it in the RV.

Organizing our lives into a 22 foot home on wheels is not going to be easy. The shelf Justin built above the cab is going to be a HUGE help. My only clever contribution was the snap-on laptop sleeves.

Laptop Sleeve

I got the laptop sleeve pattern from Ali Foster Patterns on Etsy. It was a great pattern, simple (once my mom explained it to me) and they turned out great.

I wanted a safe place to hold our laptops while traveling but also wanted them to be removable for heading out to any free wi-fi spot. So, I added the heavy-duty snaps – one on each corner of the backside of the sleeve – and screwed the other side of the snaps into the benches.

I got the exterior fabric on clearance at the store; the lining was leftover from my old curtains and the batting was leftover from our djembe bags. I’m going to miss not having my sewing machine on the road. I’ve really enjoyed learning more about sewing. I have a few more small projects to attempt before I decide it’s fate (storage or sale).

On the agenda for this week: Installing a water filter, sorting through/packing the art room, finishing my childhood dollhouse to gift to my nieces and…

Taking a maiden voyage! We’re heading out to Death Valley at the end of the week! :D

  1. Duncan really liked these – great use of space. Although I don’t know if I’d keep my laptop in there – it seems too easily kicked or bumped into! :o Have I mentioned how jealous I am of you guys!? ;D Awesome rig!

Those laptop bags are so great! I am sitting here so insanely jealous about this adventure you’re about to start. I don’t know why because I think I might go a little nuts on the road like that, but still to dream about it sounds so fun. I think you guys are going to have a blast!

  3. Mellie says:

How exciting! My husband spent a month camping around Death Valley and says it was one of the most magical times of his life. Have so much fun!

  4. Krystal says:

Very cool! From a fellow road warrior-I wish you all the best on your maiden voyage. Best thing we have ever done for our family is to take to the road. Hope you find the same to be true for yours.

  5. If I were you I would try very hard to find space for the sewing machine in the RV somewhere just because of how much less expensive it is to make clothing rather than buy finished pieces.

  6. Kristi says:

So cute! I love the fabric that you used. I’m looking forward to reading about your first trip!

  7. The snap-on sleeves are clever and cute. I am still enjoying this journey that leads to an even more exciting journey to come!

  8. @traveling, that crossed our mind. The sleeves are padded, which will help. But I’m prepared to move them if necessary!

@Impassioned, I’ve considered it. Once we start moving things in, I’ll know better if I’ll have space. I know for sure I’ll have my knitting at least!

  9. I totally thought I left a comment here. I think these are THE COOLEST things EVER.
I hope you find room for your sewing machine.
    YOU ROCK.
and for now, that is all.

  10. That is so SWEET! They would work for so many different things! Homeschool books, craft stuff, my mind in reeling!

  11. @Hippie Moose, definitely! My mom and I were talking about adding a strap, too. The pattern was simple enough to improvise that in nicely.

Can’t wait to read about all of your adventures! Have you looked into getting a Kindle to replace all your books? My husband bought me one earlier this year. I love to read and I know you do too. I think my hubby was tired of all my books stacked about! I am now in love with the thing!

  13. I’m not sure I’d like Kindle. Did you find it difficult to adjust to or did you think you wouldn’t like it at first? I’d have to try one out, I think.

  14. Val says:

Sweeeet! We plan on getting an RV one day…. I’ll have to keep that one in the memory banks!

  15. Tonya says:

How exciting.. The laptop holders are great. I guess I need to read through your blog to learn about what your family is up to…
Our family made the transition to a simple life on our homestead.
    Warm wishes,
    Tonya

wow – those are very very cool indeed. What a clever use of the space. Loving the new website look too. Best of luck for your first trip – am sure it will be wonderful, so looking forward to reading all about your adventures on the road, as someone who dreams nomadically, but doesn’t have the guts to do it for real!

  17. Summer says:

That looks awesome! What a great idea! I’ve seen in stores tiny, handheld sewing machines for about $15. They fit in a purse and you can make almost anything with them.

  18. Hmm, whether you like it or not Kindle might be a very good idea for you, or a Kindle-like thingy. I think kindle has some sort of proprietary crap attached to it so you can only load books onto it from amazon or something. But I wanna say there are some ebook readers of other brands that you can get and then load any ebook onto it no matter where you got said ebook. So you could easily download all sorts of free stuff. That way you wouldn’t have to apply for a library card in every town you stop in and you wouldn’t end up cluttering the limited space in the RV with a bunch of books you buy along the way.

And I didn’t even think of those handheld sewing machines like Summer suggested. That’s a good idea.

If you are selling any of your gardening items. I would be interested. I’m starting some of my seeds and need items related to that. Let me know. Im in SE Las Vegas.

Wow. You have come a long way from that first pair of pj pants! Nice job.
