The Fearless Girl and Her Egg

My niece, Savana, is energetic, empowered, independent, and determined. (The very qualities we want in our adults, but that can be exhausting to encourage in our two years old!) She literally ran me dizzy while we played today. She loves to laugh and move and she simply must know things for herself without taking anyone’s word for it. She’s also fearless (except for a brief stint of being afraid of her Uncle Justin – we suspect it was the beard – until she realized what a softie he is).

I can’t say that I would have been as bold when I was two years old. I’m not even brave enough now to feed those chickens from my hand! Their peck is hard! But Savana wasn’t phased. She fed them, talked to them, I think at one point she tried to kiss them (that could have ended badly).

Then she helped her Uncle Justin check for eggs and was pretty happy to have found one! We packaged it up to protect it from an overzealous grip and sent her home with her very own breakfast, courtesy of Skittles and Roxy.

  1. Such sweet pictures … appropriate for such a sweet girl.

Although I am vegan, my husband and our daughter are omnivores. Years ago, we had chickens and every so often, the daughter (X) is in tears over the fact that we don’t have chickens anymore. (She’s 17.) I wish that we were allowed to keep them in our village. We would be allowed to ride snowmobiles all over town, just no chickens. Hmph.

My son and I are looking forward to the Iowa snow melting so that we can build our coop and add some pretty girls to our backyard. Could you post more about how you built yours? Could we see it? Thank you.

So cute! I think my little one is pretty brave, but can be touch and go with animals. I wonder how he would take to a chicken?

I love the pictures where she is smiling at the egg and smiling at the chicken!

  6. Beautiful, much like my two year old!

we want chickens. luckily, we know a lot of farmers who are happy to let us visit and to let the boys hold, feed and collect eggs every month or two! :) cute pix. 2 is indeed fearless!

  8. She is adorable. Though I’m not sure I’d have let her get her face that close to the chicken’s beak. I’m a big fan of letting kids make mistakes and hurt themselves if need be in order to learn to avoid things, but there’s a bit of a difference between a burned finger from touching something hot and a lost eye from having a chicken get spooked and attack you. Just sayin…

  9. I was actually snapping photos when she suddenly leaned in and I happened to catch what looks like a potentially scary situation. What’s not pictured is Justin just outside the frame making a quick movement to move the chicken and my niece apart. But yes, it could have ended badly! Thankfully, all is well! :)

    She is so precious!

  11. Seriously. I have to figure out a way to take those girls when you start your RV journey. LOVE the photos of the egg in that chubby baby hand!!

Fearless, indeed! I hope to have that level of courage someday :) We hope to have an assortment of chickens ourselves, and I hope that my little ones will be as brave as yours!
