I gave in. I joined Facebook. Staying in contact with non-blogging, non-Twittering family and letting them know where we are on the road finally won out.
But I’m determined not to let it be a time suck. I figure this is best done by maintaining a feeling of cynicism and reluctance towards the whole thing.
It helps that I don’t entirely understand it yet.
I also added Google’s Friend Connect (lower right column of the blog). I’m told it helps Blogspot users follow my blog easier, but I’m not sure I entirely understand that, either.
Do you see what peer pressure does to me? Next thing you know I’ll be chugging the Kool-Aid and jumping off bridges.

Ha. I hate to say it, but I’m one of the ones addicted to Facebook. Of course, I’m a college student and there isn’t a WHOLE lot to do in between classes on weekdays. I hope you learn to understand it so you can definitely keep in contact with your immobile family.
WOO HOO!! There’s a bridge by MY house!! And I make KICK ASS koolaide.
So funny. I saw the title of your post on my blog list, and I KNEW it would be facebook!
Have fun!
Well, it’s better than MySpace, though Twitter’s more fun. I also have a Facebook page mainly for family and friends. Let’s see if I ever make a homeschooling/unschooling-related page.
Thanks for the google friend connect tip.
oh and once again… Welcome to the darkside!
lol. I hardly use my facebook account. I just assume they can all read my blog. As long as you don’t start playing the stupid games and quizzes, you’ll be fine.
Can you tell me how you added Friend Connect? I tried to do that before, and I couldn’t figure it out. I can’t figure out how to do anything to WordPress.
@Lisa C, I just went to the link (Google it and it pulls right up, of course). Then I found the “Add New Site” and followed the directions from there, then added the widget.
I resisted the idea of FB for a long time. I joined just over a year ago and I LOVE IT! I think if you live away from your home town it can be more compelling. I’m glad you asked me to be your friend (heehee)
I loved Facebook when I first joined. It was so fun getting in touch with people from high school and my single days, people I haven’t seen in years. Now I have such a wide variety of people, and all from different walks of life and beliefs, seems like I have to be careful of what I put as a status updates so as not to offend. Maybe I’m just becoming a little more guarded about my thoughts, and not as willing to share them anymore
Okay, good. I was wondering if that was you!
I agree with April C. There are some “friends” that I would like to “de-friend”, but do not. I just don’t post as often. Other times I could care less what they think and post anyway. Depends on the subject. No matter what, it is a way for family to keep track of us and see pics of the baby girl.
I can’t believe you gave in to the hype.
Yay! I’m so glad you added the google contact!!
BTW, the google contact thing…. I have a blogger account with a list of blogs that I’m following… now that you have this link, when I choose to follow you it will give me updates when you post a new blog. A lot easier than remembering to check my list!
I’m glad you jumped on the bandwagon. You might even start to like it more than Twitter. *gasp!*
I know a lot of people resist FB, but it all depends on your own priorities and how you choose to use your time. As someone who has lived in lots of different places and countries, I absolutely love it because it has helped me get back in touch with friends I haven’t seen in years, and to keep up to date in very little time each day with what’s going on in their lives. Yes, you can get obsessed with it. But it’s a useful tool, especially for someone on the road.
Oh no! Another one sucked into Facebook. lol
If you use it to stay in touch with your loved ones it really is a neat program. But watch out for your old fifth grade boyfriend or that girl who sat next to you in high school. Yeah I know, how can most of us even remember that far back? Trust me, they will track you down and start coming out of the wood work. It’s weird. How do you respond to the question: “Hi there. What have you been up to!” What have I been up to? I haven’t talked to you on over 20+ years! It can get a little crazy.
What actually don’t dig about Fb is 1) peeps in school I didn’t mind losing touch with and 2) family I frankly don’t want to be connected to online! It’s good in limited doses, but I am looking forward to getting to know some of our unschooling tweeps a little better – definitely better than the guy from high school I spoke to once who keeps sending me friend requests.
