City of Rocks Stole My Heart

Grassy Run

Okay, City of Rocks wasn’t quite the spot that takes my breath away and although I’m told it’s the place for star-gazing it was too cloudy to see the most stars I’ve ever seen (both on my list), but it was so gorgeous we will most definitely be making our way back in the future for a longer stay. We spent our short day there scrambling rocks and staring out over the valley below.

You can see more photos from City of Rocks here.

Unfortunately we left the peace behind. The trek from City of Rocks to Albuquerque wasn’t the best. Apparently we need to have a talking to with our GPS about not navigating us through steep, narrow mountainous roads covered in ice and snow with sharp drops. An early morning panic attack pretty much sets the intention for the rest of the day and it was hard to recover from there; we had numerous mishaps and bad moods and one ridiculous incident we’ve agreed never to speak of again.

We’re now settling into the farm, Zeb is making FAST friends with the two unschooling kids here and we’re all catching our breath before the real fun begins!

Possible farm duties: the usual feeding (of animals and humans) and garden care, sheep sheering, milking and if we’re lucky we’ll see the birth of goats and cows! :D

Those types of days are difficult and my husband and I have had many of those during our RV travels. Thankfully, those are also the days that we can quickly forget!

Your farm stay sounds fabulous. We have really wanted to do that as well but have not been able to. Look forward to hearing about your experience.

    Safe and happy travels!

  2. I am so excited to see your posts on NM. I miss it there so much! Love the new header, too!

  3. P.S. Love the pics, too. I’ve noticed lately that a lot of your pics have a antique-y wash – a beautiful, faded, golden tint. Are you doing that on your camera, or with software? So lovely!

Should have the dread post up tomorrow on my 5 Seed blog – will let you know!

  4. That’s all photoshop! I’m having a blast with it. I tend to go thru moods with my photos and I guess all this traveling feels a bit Americana; have to have an antique look to go with it!

If you have a chance, you should go see Bosque del Apache too (south of Albuquerque). Amazing (if you like birds, especially).

Love the photo in your post the best. That’s so cool that you get to work on a farm! What a wonderful learning opportunity (and character-building, too, I am sure, as would this whole adventure!).

Boo! So sorry to hear of the rough day. We have to have them though, for lessons and gratitude of all the wonderful days! Hope it ended with a big hug and that “the incident” stays in your hearts forever as inspiration! Can’t wait to see and read about this farm!!

Sorry things aren’t going quite the way you expected.. Love reading your blog and can’t wait to see pics of NM.. My husband loves it there and he’s slowly converting me.

I am very envious of your adventure. We keep saying once we get the debt down we are going to live on a small farm. Enjoy

Oh those GPS they make you take the highway when you want the back roads and the back roads when you want a highway.

I came home one time to find a muddy car and wife. She took a curvy gravel road to the next town and slid off into a ditch on some ice on the way there. She never bothered to call me because what could I do, I was at work. She found out from the farmer while waiting for the tow truck that she should have taken the paved road one block over.

I tell anyone with a new GPS to set a destination behind or to the side of where they want to go and practice not doing what it says. Don’t turn off your driving brain in favor of a computer programmer who’s never been where you are. After a while the GPS will work better, as you learn that it is not gospel.

Enjoy the travels, you need the down to have ups. Thanks for sharing with all of us!

My husband and I have so many ridiculous ‘things that we shall never speak of again’! And, even a couple of ‘that evil which we dare not speak its name’s…haha!

    The picture is gorgeous!

And, I am off to check out this City Of Rocks. I just bought a ’79 VW bus, and we’re hoping to have it restored & on the road for long trips next year.

    Thanks for sharing your adventures!

  14. Totally agree with Ryan about GPSes, and I don’t even have one. I think for you guys since you have wireless internet cards for you laptops it might be a good idea to supplement the GPS with mapping your own route in Google Maps.

oh dear, sounds like a rough day – so difficult when one mishap starts the day off to get it back on track – always seems to lead to a downward spiral. GPS can be such a pain – we live in an area with lots of tiny country lanes and there are always items on the local news about lorries being stuck fast having followed the GPS (not a lot happens here, just the way we like it). Loved the feel of fluidity and movement in your photo – it gives a real sense of wide open spaces.

Farm stay sounds so great – we had a holiday on a working farm when Christopher was two and he got to feed the chickens and goats and collect eggs – he still remembers it now and asks (begs/pleads) to go back – am sure it’s going to provide some great times for you all

  16. I’m just amazed to be along for the ride with y’all!

  17. @Ryan and Impassioned, I totally agree! Unfortunately our internet wouldn’t work where we were so we were just winging it. When will mobile internet be via satellite instead of cell towers I wonder?

Oh I hate GPS mishaps! I do however simply adore all the photos you are taking from your roadtrip. Did you say that you were using a photoshop plug-in?

City of Rocks also stole my heart. I’ve been reading your blog for about an hour, I stumbled upon it via no poo but your full-time RVing kept me here, and now I see this. Funny how that happens at times. Best, Nan
