I’m fairly certain we’ll be attending the Rethinking Everything Conference in Dallas in September and I’ve decided that for #26 on my 28 Things list, I’m going to be onstage for their talent exhibition with my hula hoop. Fer realz.
I hate even putting it out there because I know the tendency for life to hand me route changes. But if I’m going to accomplish even half of what’s on that list, I need to get moving and a little public humiliation accountability may just be in order.
I also love all the hooping inspiration that’s been traveling the ‘net and hearing so many new families picking up a hoop. It’s just fun! And if Sara can put her (admittedly much more awesome than mine) practice video out there, we can too.
Things to know about this video:
- I think we laughed as much as we hooped. Then we watched the videos and laughed some more.
- This was filmed at five weeks, which is almost two weeks ago. Because that’s how long it takes to edit and upload a photo these days.
- Stick around to the end for Justin’s hysterical performance. I wish I could add captions or turn up the volume on what he said. So much of his hilarity is in his tones.
- Notice how my child steps on an ant hill and I go right back to hooping? Mother of the Year, that one.

I really enjoy hooping. I enjoy accomplishing a trick I didn’t think I could manage. I enjoy the movement and flow and energy. I really, really enjoy watching this video of an amazing hooper doing some stuff that literally dropped my jaw. I want to do what she can do.
Are you hooping? What new tricks have you learned?

I’ve been hula hooping my whole life, but only recently have I discovered all this cool stuff on the ‘net like you guys! I went to my first hoop dance class today and have already learned a few new things…or at least a few things to work on. It’s so fun, and I love it, too!
I love your videos, they made me laugh, you are doing so good!! I went to target and bought a hoop last week and what I learned once I got it home was that it was to small for me to hula hoop with
. I guess I got a kids size. O-well, I’m going to get me a bigger one and start practicing, it looks like so much fun.
Regarding the anthill, you had a healthy level of concern in your facial expression
Regarding the hooping, you’re so badass, I can’t wait to be as cool as you, I have a feeling RE moms will be hoop-happy for days this year <3
These videos were fun to watch. It’s great to see you and your family interacting.
Since you were on Humans Being, I’ve been listening to all of the past podcasts. I love them. Attending a Rethinking Everything Conference is on my list of things I’d love to do. Now that I know about it, I can start saving, although this year isn’t really an option for me (what little money I’m hoping to make is earmarked for various bills and savings for other projects for the year).
Good luck with the hooping!
wwo! I’m jealous…. and inspired to dig my hoop out and start again I wanna do some tricks like that! xox
I love the videos. The hooping is great, but the family connection and fun? I could listen to you guys all day
Last night I was wishing I had my video camera while watching the kids hoop. I think Maeve, especially, has found her calling.
Great job, guys! Thanks for sharing!!
PS ~ Justin almost made me spit my tea all over. What a fun family event!
I looooooved your videos!! The family hoops together WHOOPS together.. y’all were killing me.. and I was laughing right along with you!! too cute.. and you are GOOD… dang.. elbow passing behind you?? are you kidding me?? You and Sarah have inspired me to get my hoop back out and learn some tricks.. uhmmm it’s a trick for me just to do the regular hoop!
Hoop on!
Annie
Lookin good!
I seriously can’t do the elbow pass. Not yet anyway. But I have the bruises to prove I’ve tried.
I’ve been working pretty hard on the vortex and have wacked myself on the head so many times I’ve lost count.
lol – LOVE the video – BEST PART is Zeb stepping on the ant hill – hahahaha!
LOVE IT!! I’m hooping, but the only thing I’m doing is regular loops. lol Josh is trying new things tho, and I can’t wait to show him what Z is doing when I get home from Indiana!
It’s been a while since these hips have hooped, but I’ve been wanting to get some for me an the kids. I loved mine when I was a kid. Especially when my mom would do it with me.
Woohoo! You guys are awesome!
Justin made me crack up when he called it the “shimmy shimmy cocoa puff”. LOL
Oh my gosh! At 3:17 in the first video, Zeb makes this “awwwww” noise. Silas does that exact thing anytime he accomplishes something! It can be as small as taking the last gulp of milk in a glass. Kids this age are AWESOME.
Awesome!!
It’s so fun to watch you all in action.
Very cool. For some reason this reminds me of when I was in colorguard…
Love Love Love!! I just got the hooping at the knees down (though it left me all bruised up) but I cant seem to get it from waist to knees! Thats my trick to continue working on! I adore your locks! My dreads are mere babies and Im loving them but also cant wait to see them mature like yours!
After reading your first post on Hula Hooping, I’d been planning on hosting a hula hoop making party w/ my daughter for a playgroup. It was a HIT. We made 14 hoops, for kids 2-7 – the little hoops were ADORABLE. Thanks for the fabulous idea, I gave you props on my blog
Good luck at the talent show!!!!
Aw, you’re coming to Dallas again?
& those vids are AWESOME btw. WTG!
love these videos tara! i am still working on the vortex myself.. haha. you guys look like you’re having too much fun
You and your family are such an inspiration – I felt compelled to buy a hula hoop. I’m pretty sure I can’t make one as perfectly round myself. I saw my 6-yr old son in action on the playground and knew he should have one for home. Now it’s MY goal to at least improve by the end of summer – no tricks for me, just trying to get it to revolve more than 3 times (my current record).
Thanks again for posting the Vimeo – it was great to see such fun and hear such laughter.
My favorite part? Well Justin doing the Shimmy of course.
Oh I love that whole video. Definitely makes me want to go buy a couple of hula hoops!
Love all the family love and laughter.
Wooooo! Hoopin’! I still don’t have a non-aircard wi-fi signal to watch these…but when I get to a coffeeshop, I will
I did watch a tiny little bit and I love it! You guys are doing awesome. I so cannot wait to get back together and hoop all night. A few nights ago I went to an awesome hooping event in Denver and learned some sweet new moves that I’ve never tried before. I will try to take a video and send them to you! much love mama. xxoo
Loving your blog ~ happy hooping!
Tara,
The other day we were at the local hardware store getting supplies for our backyard shade and saw someone sitting outside their car with a big hoop going to town. We waved and she smiled back seeming very happy.
In Frith,
Devin
I’m WAY behind in commenting on this – computer problems prevented me from watching it when it first popped up on my Google Reader, and then I forgot to come back until now. What fun videos! You guys are talented – and you have such a lovely family!
[...] [] There’s a new hooping family in town and Tara Wagner, The Organic Sister, is not only hooping it up with her kid and her husband, she’s decided she’s going to share her talent with others – and thinks having a little public accountability about that may be in order. She writes, “I’m fairly certain we’ll be attending the Rethinking Everything Conference in Dallas in September and I’ve decided that for #26 on my 28 Things list, I’m going to be onstage for their talent exhibition with my hula hoop.
