Inspiration Monday – Hooping Edition

Bench Monday - Hooping Edition
Bench Monday – Hooping Edition

I have a new hobby thanks to Sara. Hooping! Oh my goodness, so. much. fun!

We made our own hoops and decorated them ourselves. Zeb and Justin even made one and Zeb and I have already had about three hoop-offs. My hips are a bit tender, but they’re toughening up already. My new exercise of choice (cuz if I’m gonna exercise it had better be fun)!

A little hooping inspiration for you…

And anytime I’m feeling frustrated or discouraged….

Are you a hooper too??

*************

We’ll be heading out of Hill Shade tomorrow. :(

We plan to spend a day or two in Austin and then up to the Dallas/Fort Worth area for several days. (If you’re in either area, let me know!)

After that our plans have changed: Justin is postponing the trip up to Eugene, OR for now. There are details to the veg conversion work that I’ll let him share soon. Instead we’ll be heading into Louisiana for some work he’ll be doing with a friend.

We’re going to miss everyone here, but at the same time it’s kinda exciting to be heading onto new things!

Happy Hooping!!

Awesome!!! I was googling earlier looking for classes in my town. I didn’t come up with any so I’m excited for all the links, thanks!

I didn’t comment on your last post but I really enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see what comes down the line…

  2. Jennifer says:

There was a couple of girls at the Relay for Life thing on campus who were doing some crazy moves with hula-hoops. I have never mastered it, but I might try again. :D

  3. I used to hoop tons as a kid, but I lost my groove! When we went to that unschooling camp in Oregon last year there were hula hoops, poi, and diablos galore and it got me interested in trying it again. I REALLY lost my groove. LOL I need to buy one, though, and really get myself back into the swing of things. Have you ever made yourself a pair of sock poi? There are tutorials all over the place online and they’re way fun to play with a do tricks with. That’s been our thing lately…

Bummed you guys are postponing the PNW, but hey… you’ve gotta go where the road takes you. When it takes you up this way, we’ll see ya. :)

I’ve been wanting something heavier that a store bought hoop, just not sure to go about it. Now I do.
Very nice instructions link. I think we have a bit of that tubing leftover from our irrigation.

    Hi,
I live in Granbury (30 mins. sw of Ft. Worth), but lived in Arlington most of my life. I can give you some ideas of things to do, stuff to see in the area if you want. I’m a mom of three, RMT, homebirther, etc. ;-) .

    I love you blog-thanks for sharing :-)

  6. Anna says:

Yessss! I’m so pumped about you guys coming to town! :) Cool links, settling in to watch and learn. Hopefully. (I never really got the hoolahoop thing down as a kid…)

  7. Cat says:

    LOVE THIS

  8. ROCK ON!! I am so excited to make a HOOP!! I’ve lost the ability, and I just KNOW it’s because I can’t find a big enough hoop. Now I can MAKE one!!

  9. denise says:

Oh, I used to love to hula hoop…I used to twirl fire and knives too (for shows) and hoops entered through some performance art stuff that way. :) Can’t hoop anymore though…bum spine.

  10. v says:

Thanks for sharing these videos! I’ll be sharing these with my daughter in the morning; I think she’ll enjoy them as much as I do.

I was never good at the hula hoop, but I still like to try sometimes. :)

  11. Sara says:

Yay for hooping! It’s been so much fun learning together. We’ll have to send each other videos of our progress :) Or, we could just be neighbors again soon. I like that option better. Missing you already…xxoo

  12. Alison says:

I’ve been reading for awhile (’bout a year?) and I must say, I’m really enjoying this specific post format :)

  13. OK now Im inspired, lets go make hoops!!

  14. Bethany says:

Found your site yesterday. Utterly inspiring. . . in so many ways. I’ll definitely be stopping back by in the days to come!

  15. kristen says:

Awesome!! My kids are hoopers-they are part of a local stilting circus. There teachers do cool fire acts too. I am working on my coordination!! Have fun

  16. Crystal says:

Too funny, I just made my first hoop after catching the bug last week. Still getting it all figured out, but yes, it’s great fun :)

  17. Jenna says:

My friends and I got into hoops at the beginning of the year… I think I’ve made 8 hoops off of those same instructions :) I LOVE IT!!! My friend Megan is definately the best at it, though. She’s got a killer LED hoop from TrickConcepts.com – they’re a wee pricey, but it’s the best one and price I’ve seen. She’s been learing off of the DVDs Hoop Dance. I’d reccomend those videos!

  18. k8et says:

    i’m a hooper!

    I love hooping.org for videos/lessons.

Oh, and for inspiring?? check out this amazing hooper – http://www.youtube.com/user/ThunderShyne#p/u/24/WCQo4K3cjEE

There is something about this picture that exudes happiness and freedom; so inspiring!
I “hooped” when I was a little girl; I suppose many of us did! This is the second time hooping has shown up in my life so far this week. I think someone is trying to tell me to make a hoop and get going!

  20. Simone says:

Yay for hooping! I, too, caught the hooping “bug” several years ago and am still going strong. It is just so much fun! And SaFire’s inspiration video is amazing. It almost always makes me teary eyed.

  21. Katie says:

I am so totally off to buy supplies so I can host a hula hoop making party!

    Thanks, Tara!!!!!

  22. that’s got me inspired to make some hoops with my girls!!

  23. Audry says:

    where in Louisiana you headed?

  24. Vanessa says:

SaFire is my hero. She’s so adorable and hoops with such ease.
I have my own beautiful hoop I made myself, but kinda gave up after a week or so of hideous bruises. I need to pick it up & try again.

  25. Bethany says:

So. . . we finally got our family hooping videos up! I linked to your blog. . . what a fun family activity.

  26. How fun! We just took a hoop dancing class last Friday.
We’ve been holding off on getting our own hoops until we’re sure we can find a place to store them on the RV.

  27. Autumn says:

Louisiana is beautiful. What can I say, it is my home! There are some nice millworks here, also. Hope you try some crawfish or some of our wonderful cajun food while you are here!
    :)

  28. Nicole says:

    Hoop making materials update:

Lowes and Home Depot both only have 1/2 inch poly tubing.
Star Nursery has 3/4 inch but not 1 inch.
Michael’s (craft store) has a rainbow duct tape selection. They even have tie-dye duct tape.

  29. Nicole says:

Tara, when you made the hoops, what was the connector inside the hoop made of? Metal or plastic? And what was it’s original purpose? I’m trying to find something like the website used, but having no luck.

  30. @Nicole, they are plastic connectors made especially for the irrigation tubing. They come in a bag of 10 or so for a few bucks.

  31. patricia says:

I’m a little late to the party, but I love this post! The only even quasi-athletic accomplishment I ever had as a kid was winning a hula hoop contest when I was nine.

I know what I want for my birthday next week!

Thanks so much for the inspiration, Tara. I’m linking this…
