Inspiration Monday – The Most Stars

The Most Stars (I've Ever Seen)

#2 on my list of 28 Things is “Stand Under More Stars Than I’ve Ever Seen”.

A few weeks ago, this was a panic point. Justin and Zeb were standing outside in Wisconsin and admiring the stars. I couldn’t see what they were talking about. Even with my glasses on I just couldn’t make out more than a slightly hazy sky.

I was feeling beyond bummed about the whole thing – would I really never see a sky full of stars?! Was I doomed to the Big Dipper only?

Then I stumbled across an article in a small health publication. It stated that visions problems may all be in my head. (No pun intended.)

Hmm, it was certainly worth a try. And since my glasses had seen an unfortunate meeting involving a closet door, it wasn’t like I was dying to wear them scratched and slightly bent. So I started going without my glasses and telling myself my vision was improving every day.

Now I have no idea if they are quantifiably “better”, but I do know I spent a long night last week searching for constellations and meteors with Zeb, and sitting mesmerized under the most amazing smattering of stars I’ve ever seen. :D

Truly one of the most inspiring nights I’ve had…

yay for better vision! i’ve been exercising my eyes for about 3 or 4 years now and each year, my prescription lessens! i need to get back to the exercises, i’ve slacked off but if you’d like to try them, simply sit or stand in a comfortable position, hold up your index fingers on each hand, extending one hand as far out as you can, finger pointing up and the other hand halfway between the extended hand and your face, finger pointing up. next, focus your eyes on the closest finger and count to 5, refocus your eyes on the farther finger w/o moving your head and count to 5, then refocus on an object further out and refocus again, counting to 5. reverse the focus to the farther finger then closest finger, counting to 5. keep going back and forth several times. i do this 3-4 times a day. it’s something you can do just about any where you are. :) i have gone from -4.75 in one eye down to -3.25 and -4.5 to -3.0 in the other. this exercises the muscles in your eyes, making them stronger and reteaches them to focus further out.

  2. i am so excited to read your post as well as Kristine’s eye exercises – i so don’t like wearing my glasses (no matter how cute the frames are!) – ready to give these a try :)

I don´t wear glasses, but I guess we all might have some vision problems in our heads…

It´s like the way kids make us look at different things. We should all try to look differently at things and at things we don´t usually look at.

Nice to reflect on this and as I´m about to leave the house, I´ll exercise my vision :)

My vision has become better since I started to wear contacts, I take them out and I can see well for a day or so!

Many many times people do too much reading, find they need glasses so they get them and continue reading and find they need a stronger prescription. Your eyes will adjust to what you are doing most. I find that when I spend too much time in front of the computer I can tell my vision is changing.

I’m going to try this. Everytime I get new glasses, I have to retrain my eyes to see through that prescription.

  7. We just returned from a camping trip at 10,400 feet in Colorado where, on a new moon and a clear night, the stars were dazzling and breathtaking. Glad you found a way to “see the most stars.”

Thank you so much for this post! It really inspired me to take off my glasses too, and I’m seeing the magic all around me: in the clouds, in a smile, in noticing a bright pink, sparkly bicycle. It’s amazing!
I hope you don’t mind, I linked to this post on my own little blog (www.twobicycles.org).

I also wear glasses but could not go without them. I also do stargazing and the more I´m into the subject, the more I see. Just got some books on the subject some days ago- some in German, my mother tongue, some in English. The English ones are for kids: “Glow-in-the-Dark Constellations: A Field Guide for Young Stargazers “, which is really helpful and fun and “A Child´s Introduction to the Night Sky”. While none of them is “perfect”, they altogether help me a lot and form a good package. And now I´m not sad any more that it´s getting dark here already at a quarter to eight in the evening again and autumn has clearly come- as it helps me thinking, that, the earlier it gets dark, the earlier I can see the constellations I read about and looked at in my books and don´t have to wait till 10 p.m. or even midnight, like in summer;-) Because lately I get tired very early and don´t have a lot of energy to go out to a dark spot to see the stars late at night… Happy autumn and happy stargazing for you, your partner and for Zeb!
