Lotus and the Golden Pearl: A Review

Libby Pink, the author of Lotus and the Golden Pearl: A Young Girl’s Peace Odyssey, sent us this book to read and review. The book is about a young girl, Lotus, and her adventures with the animals on the island of Meris. When she arrives on the island, much against her will, the animals explain their plight of three mean-spirited seals causing problems on the otherwise peaceful island and ask Lotus for her help. With the assistance of a golden pearl that holds an image of a beautiful doe, Corey, Lotus obliges and sets about finding a solution.

Zeb read the first three chapters on his own. It’s a good chapter book for “independent readers”, but the story didn’t appeal to him. The book seems heavily geared toward girls with its pink cover and female leads. I read the entire thing on my own, but I’ll admit it’s very hard to judge the book from an adult perspective alone.

I will say in my opinion it seemed better suited for younger audiences. The story was simple and the message was very understandable, but the book lacked the depth and complexity we’re both used to reading at his age. I did concur with the message of empathy and understanding of supposed enemies, although the storyline was a bit choppy.

I think we’ll pass this book along to my niece’s who might enjoy it more.
