Playing, Parents and Podcasts (On My!)

It seems like everywhere we go is better than the last…or maybe our excitement is simply renewed with each turn of the key?

We’ve been chilling in DFW since last week and despite the humidity (can I overstate how much it sucks?) we’ve had a blast with the unschoolers in this area. If you’re looking for a hoppin’ mindful parenting community, this is the place!

We were told of the Whole Life Unschooling Meetup and planned our arrival to coincide with their park day last Thursday. I’m SO glad we did! The whole tribe was amazing and we enjoyed the discussion group as much as we enjoyed swinging like monkeys.

Zeb Swinging 2

Tara Swinging

We met LeeAnn and her kids there and Zeb and Seth hit it off immediately. We made plans for ice skating with them on Tuesday. That lasted about 20 minutes before the boys had other plans. They all set up their laptops and played Age of Mythology for the rest of the afternoon. :) I wish we had had more time with them!

Starbucks Gamers

Thursday night we boondocked with Sarah and Chris Parent and their kiddos. (Yup, the same Parent’s from Discovery Health’s Radical Parenting!)

Parachute Bouncing

Sadie and Sarah

We totally clicked with them. They are getting ready to hit the road full-time this summer, so we talked non-stop about transitioning and deworking and RVing. Then we talked some more about unschooling and family and neighbors and on and on…Then they joined us for not one, but TWO potluck dinners at our campsite where we met up again with the Happy Janssens (they can’t get enough of us). And we hooped and laughed and chatted and played.

Seriously, I think I’m in love with this family. Sarah and Chris are such inspirational parents, and just wicked cool people. (Wah! I didn’t get any photos of us together!)

I can’t wait for them to get on the road so we can see each other again. There has been talk of a gypsy caravan. ;)

Sarah also does a rockin’ podcast over at Humans Being and we had so much fun doing a live interview with her! Be sure to check it out!

Podcasting

Current Location: Hanging out in a campground outside Dallas and watching the weather. We’ll either head into Louisiana tomorrow or hunker down and wait until the rain blows over us this weekend. Until then I’ll be plenty busy practicing my new hooping tricks! :D

  2. Ok, this is bothering me… Did you ever at any point type out the words behind the acronym “DFW”? Because I have no idea what that means/where that is.

Also, no you cannot overstate how much humidity sucks. If you’re going into Louisiana get ready for it to get even worse (probably).

  3. Roblynn says:

I love your pics of the boys playing computer, we have tons of those.
Also when I went to DFW last year to visit family from Costa Rica I was complaining to my sis-in-law how dry it was LOL.

  4. @Impassioned, DFW stands for Dallas/Fort Worth…the whole area is just sorta connected (it’s huge!).

Ugg, I know LA is going to be HARD to handle!

  5. Oh i love your blog! It’s so awesome when you find a new read! I use to have a roomate in San Francisco. Her son was name Zeb. It’s the only other time I’ve heard that name until now. She said his name was from a TV character (Ireland I think? I’m not sure).

I love hearing this- to hear your voice is really great.
I had a question for you and your man- did your 5 year plan that you talk about have to do with the fact taht you were wanting to get on with this nomadic life style, or was it more because that is the ‘right’ thing to do when you are a ‘responsible adult’? Just curious, because this is the biggest thing holding my husband back from considering this type of lifestyle with me. I think I will have him listen to this podcast
Thanks so much to all of you for sharing with us all!
I know we would love doing this, just a matter of stirring it around and making it happen.

  7. Lisa Z says:

Eli would love to be sitting there playing computer games with those 3 boys. It looks like his idea of a great time! You guys are having too much fun…;-)

  8. @Vanessa, our five year plan had to do with being out of debt and with enough savings to buy our own land outside Vegas. As the unemployment changed that we reevaluated and chose to do this first. We’ll still have our land someday. ;)

You can actually read some of “the plan” here: http://theorganicsister.com/2009/01/the-five-year-plan/

  9. Vanessa says:

Cool thanks so much Tara- if you find that you are in NorNeva let me know… I’m here in Reno :)

again, loved the pod cast! so very cool to hear your stories.

Hey guys. I loved the interview and feel a ton closer to y’all now that I have heard a couple of voices. Now I am waiting for some video to show up! hahahaha.

Seriously though, I enjoyed hearing your perspective from your own mouth rather than always reading it with my own interpretations.

As always…praying for y’alls safety on the road.

  12. Jennifer says:

YOU MUST GO TO NEW ORLEANS! :D It is in my humble opinion and for living there for 5 years, simply the coolest place on earth!

  13. joan says:

Great podcast. I enjoying listening to you as a guest and will continue to listen to Sarah.

  14. Jennie says:

I loved the interview Tara and Justin! Thanks for being so honest about your life’s journey. xoxo

haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast yet, but am looking forward to hearing your voice – and being surprised how different it is from the “voice” I get when I read your words (or is it just me who is always surprised that people don’t sound as I imagine them!?!) Sounds like you’ve been having some wonderful times – and spending time with some wonderful people – doees life get any better ?!

  16. Chris Parent says:

Thanks for sharing your time with our family. Had an absolute blast and I am quite sure we will see you again before you split to LA :-)

  17. Ahhh, thank you for clarifying :) And in regard to the humidity- I find it helps to keep your hair up off your neck and wear clothing on your lower half that is baggy so it doesn’t stick to you and on top either something baggy you can use as an impromptu fan or small and fitted like a tank top. Good luck.

  18. Just a heads up. You WILL be teaching me some hoop tricks when you’re in Oregon… :::right!?::: I’m hoping to be able to buy supplies to make mine in the next couple weeks.

  19. v says:

I finally had a chance to listen to the podcast and I know I’ll be listening to it again (and again). It was great to hear so much from you and Justin and to hear the songs.

Like Vanessa above, we’re in Reno and I’ve been hoping that you all might stop by on your way to the Pacific northwest. :)

  20. v says:

Also, I hadn’t listened to any of the Humans Being podcasts before and I now have downloaded what was on iTunes. I’ll be listening to those. Thanks for introducing me to them.

  21. Mel says:

    totally love your updates. :)

  22. Mon says:

yu guys are having such a blast, and you’re meeting the best people… maybe we gotta RV the states one day. :D

  23. This looks like so much fun! Isn’t it awesome to just click with another family…we have “fallen in love” with other families as well…in fact we convinced our closest friends here to move in next door almost a year ago so we could get more of them! :)
