I’ve decided to experiment with potato growing. I’m told they won’t do well in the heat and that I should have started them in the fall, but having a sprouting potato on my kitchen counter, I decided to give it a shot anyway.
I had two large pots of nearly finished compost. My first experiment will be if nearly finished compost will turn my spuds into compost themselves.
I put some organic planting soil over the compost. In one pot I just placed the taters in there with another layer of soil on top. Unfortunately I didn’t realize there wasn’t a drainage ole in this pot until after I drowned them.
In the other container I planted them in a mound/hill thing like I read online. This pot is situated under a hanging basket of cherry tomatoes so that the excess water will drip down to the potato pot below.
We’ll see which works best. I’m a learn as you make mistakes kinda gal so this should be a success either way. :]
The pot I’m putting money on:
The swimming potatoes in the sun to dry out:
My tomato plants are blooming. I think this is a good thing:
I have carrot sprouts!!! WooHoo!
The cherry tomato sprouted close to the edge of the hanging basket:
I realize I have a few months before I can eat any of this but I’m planning the first meal already!

Oh to live in a warmer climate…
We couldn’t possibly plant anything yet! We had snow on the ground this morning!
Today it reached a high of 42. But the temps are supposed to keep climbing.
I love it that you are taking pictures of the green and growing things!
Pinch off those early blossoms on your tomato plant so that the plant gives it’s energy to growing big and hearty first, making fruit later. You will have to wait a tiny bit longer for that first ripe tomato, but it will be bigger and better for the wait!
Oh Stacie I feel for you! Of course when it’s 118 here I’ll be envying you!
Miranda, thank you! I ran right out as soon as I read that and pinched those bad boys off!!
