Soda and Mentos Geyser

Soda and Mentos Geyser, originally uploaded by OrganicSister.

In celebration of the 4th of July, the LifeLearners held an Exploraganza. This month’s theme was “Crack, Snap, Pop”.

Z and I brought a Diet Soda and Mentos Geyser. Other friends brought Baking Soda and Vinegar or Baking Soda and Lemon Juice Bottle Rockets (shake up ingredients in a corked bottle and watch the cork fly!). Other friends brought yummy raw pizza! Mmmmm…

Z and some of the others had a blast trying to drink the geyser as it flew at their face. Ew. He suffered a belly ache and a bloody nose from all that ickiness.

We may have to try this again at our 4th of July party!

Oh, how my family loves the Steve Spangler science experiments! We first found the Mentos Geyser on YouTube, and from there found the source:

Right now, he’s featuring some more hints for the Fourth that I think we’re going to try!

Since we signed up for his Experiment of the Week, there’s not been a dull day in my house!

Hmmm…I’ve seen this on You Tube, but never thought about doing it with the boys. I know they’d love it…maybe too much!

I think we need to come to one of your events soon! Looks like you guys have alot of fun.

How did you get this to go so high? AJ has been trying this experiment for weeks after seeing it on a kids science dvd here. He’s tried all kinds of sodas and different amounts of mentos. Do you think diet soda works better than the full sugar stuff? How many mentos did you put in? I think AJ puts in about 14 or however many is in a roll.
The party sounds like a ton of fun!

Annette, we used the attachment that Steve Spangler offers. It concentrates the soda so it shoots up higher. It was about $10 but so worth it!

OMg. We just did this today! I haven’t read your blog in ages! Sorry. Labor and childbirth sort of get in the way of my blog reading.
