We use cloth instead of paper napkins, floor wipes (for spills), we compost, we recycle, we bring cloth produce bags to the grocery store and to the CSA so we don’t use the plastic bags they provide, we use cloth and canvas shopping bags, we have a low flow toilet and a low flow shower head. We use stainless steel water bottles, we have a filter on the water coming into the house from the city, we have copper piping on all water lines in and pvc on outgoing water, we recycle anything and everything, we shop at thrift shops, consignment shops, dumpster dive, trade, swap, borrow or go without until we happen to find something we have needed on the side of the road! Amazing what people throw out!

  20. Nicole says:

We’ve taken a couple baby steps around here. We shop farmers markets, compost and have made growing our own food an educational family activity. We just harvested the last of this summer’s watermelons.

I’ve decided to go vegan recently. I’ve been vegetarian since I was 10, but have been quite dependent on dairy for most of those years. I guess I never realized how awful the dairy industry is, and how much it supports the meat industry.

I try to minimize my impact in every way I can… and try to teach others about what I learn as I actively seek out information about the choices I make in my life.

What a fabulous giveaway! Thanks for the chance!

My baby steps: Well they are the normal ones, like using our own drinking bottles rather then buying plastic. I use reusable bags at the grocery even for produce and grains. I use the diva cup. We worm compost. No chemicles in our home, just essential oils and vinegar for cleaning. We drive a hybrid, all though it still takes gas at least it gets 48 miles a gallon, although I would love to read an article on your new site talking about weather or not hybrids are actually good/bad on the envirnment or not. My big thing is consumerism, I am not a fan. I try very hard to only buy products that are made in the USA, which really helps curve the spending and thoughtless shopping. Any ways nothing uber amazing but babysteps. I love the concept of your new site, cant wait to dig through it, and learn some new tricks!!!

I’ve gone Green by using GladRags for past couple years now as well as Diva Cup and The Moon Cup/The Keeper cups. I feel very good since I’ve done this.
I’ve also gone Green by using as many natural, household ingredients for as many uses as possible before buying products to clean with. These are: White and Apple Cider Vinegar, Honey, Salt, Lemon Juice, Hydrogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Olive Oil. Since then, I’ve discovered that Baking Soda makes the best underarm deoderant, as well as a great teeth whitener and cleanser. Honey is great for the hair and skin and for acne and healing of some wounds/scratches, Lemon Juice and Olive Oil make a great floor and furniture cleaner and polish, and the list goes on!

We’ve taken several steps including cloth-everything for diapering, elimination communication (diaper-free!), vermicomposting and outdoor composting, cloth hankies (two layers of flannel), cloth menstrual pads and Diva Cup, reusable containers, vinegar and baking soda cleaners, enviro-friendly detergents… but there’s always more we can learn and try!

  79. Kara Fleck says:

  82. stampylisa says:

one of the many things we have done is recycle LOTS of stuff, since our program allows so much, I cram a ton into the can they gave us to use. We also compost a ton of stuff in a ginormous pile, especially when cleaning out the pantry. crackers, old soup mixes (the spice & bean ones that get pushed to the back til they get found 6 yrs later), etc, all into the pile. I use as much glass for leftovers instead of disposable containers. I try to create less so that I don’t have to find a way to recycle or re-use it.

  85. Lynne says:

Love it Tara! Well, I am anti-consumerism, live simply, avoid plastic, cloth everything, crunch, crunch, crunch…dreadlocked so I don’t have to waste my energy or the environment’s energy on using hairdryers, straighteners. I make organic lotion and shampoo for eczema so I don’t have to consume other more commercialized products. I purchase local or handmade. I am anti-commerical products and find that even in the hippy towns -some stores that I won’t name are becoming more commercialized and it makes me not want to buy from them. I love farms because without farms we would have no food (or food I wouldn’t want to eat, NO GMO) I like real sugar and not hfcs. I love pretty grocery bags, tupperware not ziplocked, water out of filtered tap not water bottles.

  86. stampylisa says:

We do as much as we can to lighten our load on the planet. We’ve switched to reusable almost everything, napkins, towels, washcloths, diapers, mama pads, water bottles, etc. a few years ago and it’s just a part of our lives now. We recycle as much as we can, we buy almost all second hand clothes, furniture, household items. With 5 kids, I feel like we need to be as diligent as possible about taking care of our lovely planet. I’m busy right now collecting second hand hankies to use this winter instead of tissues. We’re still a long way from where we should be, but we’re getting there!
