I have a few “green” things I am adament about, particularly: cleaners and reusable bags. These two items are HUGE pet peeves of mine. As for something I would like to know more about: composting in a small Las Vegas back garden.

We use cloth instead of paper napkins, floor wipes (for spills), we compost, we recycle, we bring cloth produce bags to the grocery store and to the CSA so we don’t use the plastic bags they provide, we use cloth and canvas shopping bags, we have a low flow toilet and a low flow shower head. We use stainless steel water bottles, we have a filter on the water coming into the house from the city, we have copper piping on all water lines in and pvc on outgoing water, we recycle anything and everything, we shop at thrift shops, consignment shops, dumpster dive, trade, swap, borrow or go without until we happen to find something we have needed on the side of the road! Amazing what people throw out!
We’ve taken a couple baby steps around here. We shop farmers markets, compost and have made growing our own food an educational family activity. We just harvested the last of this summer’s watermelons.

I’ve decided to go vegan recently. I’ve been vegetarian since I was 10, but have been quite dependent on dairy for most of those years. I guess I never realized how awful the dairy industry is, and how much it supports the meat industry.
I try to minimize my impact in every way I can… and try to teach others about what I learn as I actively seek out information about the choices I make in my life.

My baby steps: Well they are the normal ones, like using our own drinking bottles rather then buying plastic. I use reusable bags at the grocery even for produce and grains. I use the diva cup. We worm compost. No chemicles in our home, just essential oils and vinegar for cleaning. We drive a hybrid, all though it still takes gas at least it gets 48 miles a gallon, although I would love to read an article on your new site talking about weather or not hybrids are actually good/bad on the envirnment or not. My big thing is consumerism, I am not a fan. I try very hard to only buy products that are made in the USA, which really helps curve the spending and thoughtless shopping. Any ways nothing uber amazing but babysteps. I love the concept of your new site, cant wait to dig through it, and learn some new tricks!!!

I’ve gone Green by using GladRags for past couple years now as well as Diva Cup and The Moon Cup/The Keeper cups. I feel very good since I’ve done this.
I’ve also gone Green by using as many natural, household ingredients for as many uses as possible before buying products to clean with. These are: White and Apple Cider Vinegar, Honey, Salt, Lemon Juice, Hydrogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Olive Oil. Since then, I’ve discovered that Baking Soda makes the best underarm deoderant, as well as a great teeth whitener and cleanser. Honey is great for the hair and skin and for acne and healing of some wounds/scratches, Lemon Juice and Olive Oil make a great floor and furniture cleaner and polish, and the list goes on!

We’ve taken several steps including cloth-everything for diapering, elimination communication (diaper-free!), vermicomposting and outdoor composting, cloth hankies (two layers of flannel), cloth menstrual pads and Diva Cup, reusable containers, vinegar and baking soda cleaners, enviro-friendly detergents… but there’s always more we can learn and try!
We go green by recycling, living simply, and being mindful of where our food comes from.
Would love to hear more about green beauty (an area I still have a lot of bad habits in LOL)
congratulations on your new venture!

one of the many things we have done is recycle LOTS of stuff, since our program allows so much, I cram a ton into the can they gave us to use. We also compost a ton of stuff in a ginormous pile, especially when cleaning out the pantry. crackers, old soup mixes (the spice & bean ones that get pushed to the back til they get found 6 yrs later), etc, all into the pile. I use as much glass for leftovers instead of disposable containers. I try to create less so that I don’t have to find a way to recycle or re-use it.

Love it Tara! Well, I am anti-consumerism, live simply, avoid plastic, cloth everything, crunch, crunch, crunch…dreadlocked so I don’t have to waste my energy or the environment’s energy on using hairdryers, straighteners. I make organic lotion and shampoo for eczema so I don’t have to consume other more commercialized products. I purchase local or handmade. I am anti-commerical products and find that even in the hippy towns -some stores that I won’t name are becoming more commercialized and it makes me not want to buy from them. I love farms because without farms we would have no food (or food I wouldn’t want to eat, NO GMO) I like real sugar and not hfcs. I love pretty grocery bags, tupperware not ziplocked, water out of filtered tap not water bottles.
am retweeting it now. (the button doesn’t work where i’m at now-blocked, but I will rT it.)

We do as much as we can to lighten our load on the planet. We’ve switched to reusable almost everything, napkins, towels, washcloths, diapers, mama pads, water bottles, etc. a few years ago and it’s just a part of our lives now. We recycle as much as we can, we buy almost all second hand clothes, furniture, household items. With 5 kids, I feel like we need to be as diligent as possible about taking care of our lovely planet. I’m busy right now collecting second hand hankies to use this winter instead of tissues. We’re still a long way from where we should be, but we’re getting there!

One of the simplest things I do to be green is recycle. Just by separtaing the paper, aluminum, steel, plastic, and glass out of the trash, my family has gone from two huge bags a week, down to barely 1/2 and much of that is either organic, which we spread out in the local park under trees, or simply stuff that no one has figured out how to recycle yet. Our recycle center is a large plastic tub with a lid… luckily, my area has comingled recycling. We take the cans to a local center that pays per pound, and we take that money and put aside to conate toward a worthy charity.

One way I’m going green – handwashing dishes (first thing that came to mind but really we do so much and need to do so much more).
we are raising chickens and eating venison
We buy organic as much as possible and are working on bringing our own bags.
We don’t use disposable products where there is a non disposable product available.
We are (slowly, unfortunately)…using only green products for cleaning – laundry, house cleaners, toothpaste and personal products. I even recently switched from my normal hairspray to a natural spray product…and have not really missed my old stuff.
We recycle anything that our municipality will take for recycling.

Awesome! I’m glad to see Sustainable Baby Steps back. For the first entry option: We don’t use paper plates, paper towels, paper napkins or disposable pads here. Also, I can finally ask something I’ve been wondering since before your travels with Benny: What are the non-disposable razors you use? I’ll eventually be finished with the razor replacements I bought at Costco and I’m looking to switch.

Great new site! Our family has gotten rid of paper towels and paper napkins and replaced them with cloth! We recycle as much as our local recycling centers will take. I use a “diva cup” for my monthly cycle (should have switched years ago-it has changed my life!) I make my own laundry detergent and hang dry clothing as much as possible. We use vinegar and organic cleaners. Fabric bags go with us to the grocery store. I’m getting ready to knit my own face scrubbies so I can phase out cotton balls. I’m sure there are more changes to come!

What a wonderful idea! I use cloth napkins at home and at work, and bring my own silverware to work each day (and often to parties!). We grow our own garden, and compost our food waste as well. We’ve been trying to keep up with One Small Change… so far we have switched to all natural cleaning, biodegradable trash bags, amped up our recycling while reducing our packaging.. switched to a moon cup and cloth pads for back up. Buying organic whenever possible..reusuable bags. Cloth hankies… lots of changes but I’m glad I made them all! this is our second season to grow some of our own food, what we do buy we try to go as local as possible, we just got chooks (yea!!), we get by with just one vehicle which we only use when we have to so if we can use public transport we do, we air dry our laundry. next on the list is to make cloth toilet wipes.

To go a little greener this year, we joined an organic CSA. Unfortunately, while I got a lot out of it, I also ended up composting a lot – which isn’t green. I really need to improve on food waste.
one thing i have done to go green is i have started to use glass jars to store everything, trinkets, food, etc, so that I no longer buy things made out of plastic.

I’ve breastfed all my babies. Cloth napkins, both kinds! I also have a Diva cup. We are learnig to grow our own food. We recycle as much as possible. We try to be aware of our waste/trash and to minimize it. We plan trips in the car so there’s no excessive running around. We have a couple rain barrels….that’s a little of what we do around here.

I am a homeschooling mother of 3, plus 1 infant. All my children were/are
breastfed, and kept in cloth diapers. We make our own soap, and we eat from our 1/2 acre garden, sharing with neighbors. We have a small flock of free range chickens, whose eggs we also share with neighbors. We freecycle, recycle, and shop thrift and swap shops as often as possible.
We use cloth diapers and grow our own garden.

Awesome site, Tara! Signed up for the Going Green Newsletter, very exciting!
Congrats on the new website! One thing we’re trying to do right is to reduce our possessions by a third. We’ve only just started. As we aren’t as broke as we used to be, we’ve bought a lot more stuff. And our children have learned from us (sadly) that accumulating unlimited stuff is okay. We want to set an example that happiness doesn’t equal consumerism, and get back to spending time together. It’s amazing how much time I spend putting all this crap away! So, that’s our current goal.
I hope your life is smoothing out a bit. Hugs.

Something to do with the chemicals in the processing… like formaldehyde for example… How do we find out the most ‘earth friendly’ products? Thanks in advance for your help.

We live in Amsterdam.
Anytime we leave the house my husband and I take canvas bags with us, in case we do any food or clothing shopping.
We recycle.
I work for an environmental protection organization, training farmers in green farming methods.
We eat very little meat, and eat local seasonal food.
We do not waste food – we cook and eat just what we need.
We bike everywhere – we don’t have a car. If we go longer distances we take the train.
All appliances we bought are highest in their energy efficiency ratings.
I don’t use anything disposable in the house – we use clean clothes instead of papertowels, I use a Diva Cup instead of tampons or disposable pads.
We do our bit!
We have stopped buying cling wrap, aluminum foil and paper towel. Also we have stopped buying commercial dishwashing liquid, washing powder, shampoo and conditioner as we make our own. As of this afternoon, I have instructed everyone in the house that this is now a plastic shopping bag free zone. (Those little suckers just kept creeping in!)

We used cloth diapers (just finished that with my youngest yeah!!) and still use cloth pads for me, to reduce our waste and disposable-ness. In the same line of thinking (for me at least) my kids use all our junk mail, or misprints etc as coloring paper. Before anything hits the recycling or trash, it gets as much use out of it as possible.

HI Tara-
My husband and I are working on developing a productive garden. I say productive because we have had it for a few years, but haven’t got the soil fine tuned. But this year, we have invested in a chicken tractor and 3 lovely hens to help us fine tune it. For us, it is about taking control of our food, supporting big ag as little as possible. We do lots of other stuff too, like wash and reuse plastic zipper bags. I have found a utensil crock with utensils to be excellent for drying those bags. I use those mostly when I buy bulk and have to freeze it in smaller portions. I love someone’s post about only buying things made in the USA, that would require lots of though. We mostly buy stuff that is “new to us” and we are huge ebayers.
I only run the dishwasher or laundry machine if they are full.

Hmm, we never buy plastic water bottles, use reusable bags, recycle as much as possible, and use cloth rags for cleaning and drying our hands. We are always looking for ways to go green. I would love to learn how to grow veggies in a cooler climate. Summer I have down pat, but fall is iffy with us

What a great giveaway to kick off your new site!
Here are some of the things we do to be kinder to the planet. We recycle and compost which almost entirely takes care of our rubbish. We grow some of our own food. We use reusable bags for everything including smaller produce ones for fruit, veges, nuts/seeds. Our home is chemical free. We made our own napkins and don’t buy paper towels/plastic wrap etc. We make conscious decisions about when we use appliances in relation to water use. We harness the suns power to dry clothes. If it rains we fill up buckets to use later on the garden. I have used a mooncup for the last 4 years.
In addition to making changes in how we buy food (CSA, organic on the dirty dozen) we’ve also started checking the labels on the kids’ clothes and buying organic cotton when it’s available. I had no idea until recently how chemically treated cotton can be!
I subscribed to the newsletter…looking forward to reading!

We dumped paper towels and bought a big bag of small towels from Costco that we use as dish cloths instead. Saves us money and reduces waste! We also use our own cloth bags, get most of our bills electronically, grow our own garden, and for over a year we didn’t have a car. My husband bikes the 22 km each way to work and I walk everywhere I can with my daughters (the younger is too little to bike still).
One thing I’m interested in learning more about are CFL’s and how dangerous (or not) they really are. We had one break and the girls and I left the house for an hour while my husband cleaned up. Luckily it broke on laminate, not carpet. But lately I’ve heard they could be dangerous even when not broken. I’m trying to learn more about the new LED light technology I keep hearing about, safe lights that are supposed to be able to last 20+ years!

I am going to start composting on the Sly even though the HOA says no!
We *try* to lead a greener life so a few of our efforts:
Use cloth “products” like napkins, dish towels, dish cloths (rather than sponge)
Use no chemical cleaning products-mostly just vinegar, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide (and *gasp* water!)
Clothesline sometimes even though we have an electric dryer
I use a stainless steel water bottle
We buy locally and organic when we can
Cloth shopping bags
Biodegradable trash bags
ETC
The one thing that I actually want to know more about right now (and this sounds silly even to me) is recycling! Everyone raves about how simple it is but it’s so intimidating to me! I have so many questions! And we don’t have a service here…well, we do but it’s $25/month that we just don’t have right now (plus there’s bins a block from my house we can take them to)

Green Lifestyle hunh! there is nothing more i love and am passionate about…
1. Only cloth diapers, cloth wipes, real oils, homemade food for my 20 month old daughter.
2. No Toilet paper, Paper Towels etc…No Forest Blood in our Home…:)
3. We take our own Plates, spoons, drinking glasses to parties and REFUSE disposable cutlery…No dumping the womb of Mother Earth, when she serves us all the delicacies.
4. No plastic grocery bags or even the plastic individual covers for the veggies and fruits….have been reusing the old ones…
5. No disposable sanitary pads for me either…love my blood much to be drained on to some disposable pad.
more and loving it all and our Big Mama Mother Earth!
I try to limit how much garbage we produce by using reusable alternatives: cloth napkins, grocery bags, rags (vs. paper towels). We also compost kitchen scraps.
A few years ago, I made a picnic box for our family containing plates, cups, silverware, a few small knives, can opener, matches, clothesline, dish soap, towel, cloth napkins, etc. It is always packed and ready to go for quick picnics or other events, so we rarely need to throw away things like paper plates and plastic forks.
My newest baby step is to be aware of the number of dishes, pots and pans we use and how to reuse some of those during the course of cooking or eating so as to wash less.

I chose whenever possible, local, organic, vegetarian food for my family. Remembering to bring our own bags! And am in the process of replacing all plastic wear in our house with glass.
One thing I’ve been doing to go green is saving glass jar to fill up with spring water. Also, bringing are own bags to the store/farmer’s market.
We use cloth bags whenever we shop (not just groceries!) and haven’t bought paper towels or napkins in over a year! We also cloth diaper and compost. Thank you for a wonderful giveaway!
I just want to say that I have been reading for several months now, and I have learned so much from you!
As for going green, we just made a bunch of rags for cleaning, I am on my second batch of home made detergent, and I use organic vegan soap and bath products!
Wow! Congratulations on all this great stuff!
Here are some tips that I do and that anyone can do:
1. Reusable grocery bags. Seriously. There’s no reason not to.
2. Cloth napkins for at home and it’s simple to also tuck one in your bag if you’re going to be getting food to go.
3. Buy less. Starting considering purchases more. Do I really need this? Do I really want this in my house? Can I do what this item does with something I already have?
OK, I’ll stop there for now.

One thing that I’d like to learn more about is re-usable pads. I tried a Diva Cup, but it wasn’t for me.
I laughed as I told one of my high school students today that I was green before it was called being green! I make an effort with every little thing, from shutting off unneeded lights to carring a cloth napkin and real spoon for lunch each day. It all counts!

We already do quite a bit that is green, organic garden, compost, raise our own chickens and goats, recycle etc. This year we put down an organic cover crop in our garden and new pasture area, that will help with soil erosion and add organic matter to the soil. i also finally got a pressure canner this year, so i will be preserving much more of our garden harvest. Canning more and freezing less.

Trying to eliminate plastic and toxins from personal care products — soap, shampoo (haven’t gone no-poo (yet), but found shampoo in bar form), deodorant, and so on. Here’s my question: you use old-school safety razors, yes? My husband got one, but the blades are packaged in plastic. Where do you find them without the plastic packaging? An answer to that question, plus any other information about personal care products would be welcome! Many thanks!

Oops—-I forgot to to share something I am doing to “go green”!
As a family, we are turning car trips into multi-tasking events….library, grocery shopping, errands and maybe even a “mini field trip” all in one day. We pack our own snacks/lunch and drinks, too (along with cloth napkins, of course)! Although a 30 mile round trip doesn’t sound like much, it SO adds up when you’re doing it multiple times per week. It just makes sense to combine trips and activities.
One thing I’ve done to go green is to start using a Diva Cup and cloth cycle pads (www.wallypop.net). Our family has also started using family wipes and we’ve eliminated the use of chlorox wipes by using microfiber towels.

How exciting! I’m trying to go plastic bag free. I carry reusable bags everywhere, but it’s hard to give up the ziplocs and the bag that invariably gets forced on you when you’re not quite quick enough at the store (and then they THROW THEM AWAY when you refuse! Incredible!) My goal is to be plastic bag free by 2011. Then I’ll give up paper napkins/paper towels. Baby steps it is!
