And we’re pretty dang excited about it! Justin posted about the installation process here: Solar panel installation.
In addition to solar power, we also have a general idea of when we’ll be moving.
It should take us about 6 weeks to sort through our possessions before we move things into the RV (or into a storage unit). Then another couple of weeks to hold a few estate sales. If it works out, we could be road ready by the beginning of March!
Between the packing and the energy independence, it’s been a pretty radical start to the New Year!

Very rad, indeed. I love following you on this journey.
The solar panels are fascinating. I can’t wait until you’re blogging from the road. That’ll really take it up a notch.
Wooo Hooo!!
This is SO EXCITING!!
Totally freakin’ AWESOME!!!
Excellent! Another step closer!
Solar in – way to bring in 2010! I’m so excited ya’ll are getting closer and closer to bringing this into reality
I’m so excited for you! I haven’t kept up with you for the last month or so. I’ve got to back and see how things are going. We have talked about RV living, but I worry there is too much of us. Plus, I have no idea what to do for money. I would hate to be stuck somewhere with four kids.
That is so awesome!!!
Wow, that’s great! You guys are going to have so much fun living your life like that! Can’t say I’m not a little envious.
Yeah! Rock on!
I am so excited for you guys! Stone is really impressed that Justin did it himself. We’ll have to go check out his post to see how easy/and/or hard it was.
Were they expensive?
The kit we got, which powers up to 600w, was less than $1300. Not including misc parts. It was confusing since we had no electrical experience but certainly possible to learn and easier than we thought it’d be.
Excellent! Dreaming of hitting the road ‘some-day’, so I’m eagerly following along with your adventure.
That is AWESOME. We hope to eventually install some solar panels on the new house. It’s practically a Port Townsend requirement.
Wow! I would love to get some of those on our house! Anyway i am very excited for you guys. Might I suggest using a small slow cooker as a cooking source to use on your new solar panels. My husband has recently gone into trucking and I have been researching ways for him to feed himself on the road and what I have found is that some truckers use small slow cookers on their trucks. I went and bought a small slow cooker at walgreens for $10. It is 1.5 qt. and it holds more than you would think. I have been cooking in it and I find alot of stuff cooks in only a few hours and it only takes like 120 watts on high half that if you use it on low. That is much less electric than other cooking appliances and could easily be used on solar. Anther thing i got him was a small rice cooker which is also pretty energy efficient about 300 watts but it cooks stuff in a half an hour or less. that was also $10 at walgreens and makes plenty of rice for me and my three kids. I have also discovered you can make much more than just rice in a rice cooker. I think those two appliance are great for anyone on the road or not on the road.
